The Chimera was a monstrous three-headed fire-breathing hybrid creature of Lycia in Asia Minor, composed of the parts of three animals – a lion's head at its front, a goat's head emerging from its back, and a snake's head at the end of it's tail. It was the offspring of Typhon and Echidna and a sibling of such monsters as Cerberus and the Lernaean Hydra.
History[]
Raised by King Amisodarus as a weapon against his enemies, and unleashed it upon Lycia of which it laid waste. Eventually the Chimera was killed by Bellerphon on Pegasus when Bellerphon jammed a lead ball into its mouth. The ball melted, killing it with lead poison and suffocation.
Appearance[]
The Chimera is commonly depicted as having the head and forelegs of a lion, the hindquarters and udders of a goat, the head of a goat emerging from its back and a snake-headed tail. The Chimera secretes deadly venom released through a bite from its snake tail and breathes fire from its goat head.
